Your Alaska Travel Update: Here’s What’s New for 2019

Totem Inn Valdez

The newest hotel in Valdez opened its doors in early summer 2018. The modern property offers double queen rooms with mini fridge and microwave, an indoor pool, fitness center, and complimentary breakfast. It’s the perfect home base for exploring the dramatic landscape around Valdez.

Aspen Homer Hotel

Scheduled for its grand opening in June 2019, this all-suite hotel features single and double queen rooms with full kitchenettes. The hotel is located next to the Alaska Islands Ocean Visitor Center, within walking distance to shops and restaurants, and a five-minute drive to Homer’s famed spit.

Bears, Trains, and ‘Bergs Tour

You’ll depart from Anchorage by train on this full-day excursion, take a side trip from the Portage Depot to the see some of Alaska’s best-known animals at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, and then continue by train to the Spencer Whistle Stop. From here you’ll raft among icebergs calved from the nearby Spencer Glacier before heading on the Placer River for a mild float. Guests make the return trip by train to Portage and then deluxe motorcoach to Anchorage.

Anchorage Coastal Cruise Guided Bike Tour

It surprises many travelers to Alaska that the Coastal Trail from Kincaid Park to downtown is one of the best places to see wildlife in the Anchorage. This three-hour guided bike ride takes you on that 9.5-mile paved path with plenty of stops for moose sightings, at interoperative signs and displays, and to take photos. Gear, snacks, and transfers all included.

4×4 Rental SUVs

Want to drive the Denali Highway or journey to McCarthy? Here’s what you’ll need: A vehicle rental with no restrictions on traveling unpaved roads. We now offer economy SUVs or 15-passenger vans approved to go beyond where the pavement ends for travelers interested in self-drive adventures.
