A $500 Winning Alaska Photo

After three weeks of rigorously rating and ranking hundreds of photos submitted for our annual photo contest, we’re pleased to announce our 2018 grand prize winner: “Chugach” by Matt Meisenheimer of Janesville, Wisconsin!

Matt took this photograph after wrapping up a photo workshop in Lake Clark National Park. No stranger to Alaska (he worked at Denali National Park as a biologist), Matt used Google Earth to scout this location in the Chugach National Forest. In person the landscape was even more impressive. As Matt wrote in an Instagram post, “The area was absolutely amazing; jagged peaks, glaciers, waterfalls everywhere. I was right on the edge of a cliff so I had an amazing view down into the valley. Definitely one of best views of my life.”

We award the grand prize to the photo that best depicts Alaska’s spectacular wildlife, scenery, people, rail travel, or adventure. Matt’s photo captured not just the variegated beauty of the state, but that dreamy sort of awe that its landscapes inspire.

Thank you to everyone who shared photos of their visit to Alaska with us this year!

Spectacular photo Matt! You are well deserved to win the Alaska Tour And Travel 2018 photo contest. I sent an entry
too which I thought was a great photo but nothing in comparison to yours. My husband and I are visiting
Alaska in July 2019, we have only visited once and rented a car traveling from Anchorage to various towns on
the Kanai Peninsula. We live in Northern California.
